Such a mixture of opposites has framed our start to 2020! For the moment - the positive anticipation that always brings in the beginning of a New Year has been counterbalanced by our profound sadness and shock that has come so unexpectantly with the tragedy of the bushfires that have ranged from across NE and SE Victoria to SE NSW. The deep impact of these fires into the future on our communities, wildlife, our environment and local businesses is both clear and evident. Yet despite these unprecedented bushfires, so many local communities have not been silenced from taking action. In various positive ways – small and large, communities in partnership have upheld a strength to resist and recover though local action, to find a shared purpose to rebuild and a voice to recall stories that we all will remember. Perhaps then – we may come to see localism, partnerships and regeneration as those positive and sustaining qualities that could fittingly characterize the new decade.
